TurbopacTM 1500 Series
(For use worldwide, subject to country codes and local
regulations. For off-road use in the U.S.A. to and including model year
1994. For other applications or model years please contact Turbodyne
Sales.)
Turbodyne's TurbopacTM system is an
electrically powered supercharger that monitors the demand for power and
delivers instant boost to the engine during transient engine operation.
TurbopacTM 1500 Series can be optimized for
applications for a variety of system voltages, pressures, flows and duty
cycles.
Turbodyne's TurbopacTM 1500 Series product line
is designed to meet the demanding operating environment of light-duty high
performance engines. TurbopacTM systems have shown substantial
performance improvements as well as reduction in harmfull pollutants.

- Consistant Performer with Long Life (Minimal Degradation)
- Is A Simple Add-On
TurbopacTM Operation
Technically
referred to as an "Electronic Demand Charger" (EDC), TurbopacTM
is an electronic supercharger that uses electrical power for short periods
of time such as for initial acceleration and passing.
TurbopacTM is capable of significantly increasing power output
of engines during acceleration. In turbocharged engines the
TurbopacTM 1500 System will eliminate turbolag and thus provide
a smoother acceleration curve.
A solid state sealed motor
controller is connected to the vehicle's battery system. The controller
provides 3-phase current to a Permanent Magnet Brushless DC motor. The
motor is directly coupled to the compressor which spools up to operating
speed in a fraction of a second.
A Y-shaped check valve is
connected to the intake manifold to provide boost pressure. Ambient air is
supplied via a connection to the air filter. An activation circuit senses
change in throttle pedal angle on diesel engines and manifold vacuum on
gasoline engines.
When the TurbopacTM system is
applied, more oxygen is available for optimized combustion during the
otherwise fuel rich operating period, resulting in reduced emissions (PM,
CO, HC, and smoke). The intake air is pressurized and the supercharged air
is fed directly into the engine.
Unlike catalytic convertor and
trap technologies, TurbopacTM systems do not exhibit
degradation in the form of reduced performance due to the accumulation of
soot, and therefore exhibit longer life.
Electrical Requirements
The standard vehicle alternator and battery are generally adequate
for operation of the TurbopacTM. Power requirements of the
TurbopacTM depends on the size of the engine and therefore
quantity and mass flow of air. A larger engine takes more air and
therefore more electrical power is needed for a constant boost pressure.
As an approximation, for any given engine, TurbopacTM draws
about 25% of the electrical current of a starter motor for the same
engine, but only for short bursts of several seconds.
Installation
The TurbopacTM System
modular design can be applied in various configurations and
TurbopacTM can be applied to a variety of diesel, gasoline,
natural gas, other alternative fuel engines and naturally aspirated and
turbo-charged engines.
The TurbopacTM System includes
all of the required functioning hardware. It does not include the hardware
required for a specific engine/vehicle installation. The customer or
installer must provide the required brackets, hoses, clamps, nuts and
bolts to complete the installation.
The TurbopacTM
compressor unit is installed in the engine compartment and is placed
between the air intake of the engine and the intake manifold. The
controller can be installed inside or outside the engine compartment.
TurbopacTM is a "stand alone" system that has no engine
driven belts or gears, requires no lubrication and is manufactured with
pre-lubricated precision ball bearings.
TurbopacTM is
an electrically operated air enhancement device and its incorporation into
an engine will require modifications to the fuel, ignition and electronic
control systems of an engine. Modifications should be done by expert
installers.
Installation of a TurbopacTM may interfere
with the performance of anti-pollution devices. Please consult with
Turbodyne Engineering for availability of exemptions on various engine
types.
