2001 Monterey Historic Races @ Mazda Laguna-Seca Raceway

If you don't like to read or can't read... skip to the bottom to see all the pictures.

This was the Datsun event of the century.  For the first time since 1973, Jon Morton and the famous #46 BRE Datsun 510 were on the track.  Accompanied by the restored #35 (now #85) car, John Morton piloted the BRE 510 around Laguna Seca two practice sessions and one historic race.  Pete Brock (now a very respected photographer and journalist) was there in his BRE jacket and (faded) blue polka-dot scarf to witness the action and take photographs of what was a rare event indeed.  It was a weekend that I will not soon forget.

Myself, fellow 510 enthustiast Sean Funk, and mutal friend Dustin Seeley all piled in my '71 L-22 powered 2dr 510 early Wednesday morning headed for Monterey California... a measley730 miles away!  For hours the three of us chewed up miles in my 510... stopping only for fuel and piss-breaks.  It was August... and it was hot.  Add to the blazing sun the wind burn that results from driving over 700 miles @ 80-85mph with the windows down... and you have some pretty toasted skin.  I think we used up two bottles of sunblock and countless cans of lip balm.  We arrived late Thursday night and piled into the trashiest $100/night hotel I've ever stayed in.

To be continued... in the meantime, here are some of my favorite picutures... these are courtesy of Sean since I haven't had time to scan mine yet.
